Congratulations to our CTRND Pilot Award Winners

CTRND is pleased to announce those who were awarded the 2022-2023 Pilot Research Grant.  The submissions were judged on their potential to generate high-impact preliminary data that would result in research project grants from outside sources and in peer-reviewed publications.  Those that were most closely aligned with CTRND’s overall goal,…

Research Snapshot: Drs. Malú Gámez Tansey & Oihane Uriarte Huarte

New research illuminates how loss of the protein progranulin may influence immune system function in the brain and periphery in aged mice. The findings help lay the groundwork for future research into mechanisms involving progranulin loss in relation to neurodegenerative diseases that have an immunological component.

Article by Doré lab team explores effects of sound and music on the brain

The article represents a team effort by undergraduate and graduate students that was initiated during the COVID-19 pandemic. It provides a detailed analysis of how music can affect the opening of the well-guarded blood-brain barrier and how it can activate the brain meningeal lymphatic system (also referred to as the glymphatic system) to potentially accelerate the elimination of toxic molecules that may have accumulated acutely after stroke or brain trauma or that may have accumulated over time, such as in Alzheimer’s disease.

Congratulations to Drs. Abisambra and Chakrabarty on Promotion and Tenure!

CTRND congratulates two of our primary faculty, Dr. Joe Abisambra and Dr. Paramita Chakrabarty, for earning tenure through the Neuroscience Department here at UF.  A reception was held in their honor to celebrate their achievements at the Suprette Wine + Provisions venue. We are so proud of what they have accomplished…

UF Neuroscientist to co-lead study into causes of Frontotemporal Dementia

Researchers from the University of Florida and two partner institutions will team up to explore possible links between the immune system and neurodegeneration in frontotemporal dementia under a new NIH/National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke grant designed to support multi-disciplinary collaborations between neuroscientists, neurologists and immunologists.

UF Neuroscientists Awarded Grants to Advance Lewy Body Dementia Research

To help combat this growing health issue, which affects over 1 million individuals in the U.S., the Harry T. Mangurian Jr. Foundation supports the Collaboration for Pilot Studies in Lewy Body Dementia, an annual research pilot award program at the University of Florida. This year, one-year pilot grants were awarded to two UF investigators conducting pre-clinical research into Lewy body dementia.

CTRND’s Grace Lloyd Featured as a MBI Rising Star

Grace Lloyd, a Ph.D. candidate in the department of neuroscience, is the latest investigator to be featured in MBI Rising Stars, a video series highlighting up-and-coming neuroscience researchers at UF.

Three UF Researchers Awarded Alzheimer’s Association Grants

Three University of Florida investigators have earned Alzheimer’s Association grants for scientists working on new ideas in research of the neurodegenerative disease. The researchers’ projects were selected based on their potential to generate exciting new data and strategies.
